The importance of Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone In Training

We all have our favorites - our favorite movies, our favorite flavors of ice cream, and our favorite old, sweaty t-shirts. But the problem with favourites is that they can keep us in our comfort zone.

Training is no different. No matter what your training experience is, you're going to have certain exercises and movements that you enjoy and others that you avoid like the plague. But the problem with only showing up for the workouts you enjoy and the exercises you're good at is that you limit your growth potential.

Think about it this way: when you become proficient at something, your progress slows. For example, it may take an hour of studying to get a 75% on a test, but to get an 85%+ score, you may need to study for 5+ hours. There is a law of diminishing returns. Your workouts are no different.

So here's the moral of the story: don't just show up for the workouts that you love. Make it your mission to also show up for the workouts that challenge you. It's those workouts that will really change you. And it's the exercises that you don't like that will give you the quickest progress. So, like mom used to say, eat your brussels sprouts, not just your ice cream.
