YOUTH ROWING

As a middle school or high school student you may join our youth program.

New rowers will find CMI is a welcoming place. We want you to learn to love the sport we love. It takes a few sessions to learn the basics but we will help you along the way.

Experienced rowers will have the opportunity to challenge themselves by improving their rowing and leadership skills on and off the water year round.

Youth Spring Season

April 7 - June 4 (no classes week of April 20-26)

Eight week session | Tu, W , Th Weekly classes 3:45-5:30pm

Spring rowing is an exciting and energizing time at CMI as we transition back to on the water. This year we are extending the season to eight weeks! Keep in mind, with shifting winds, cooler temps, and dynamic conditions, it’s a season that builds resilience, teamwork, and real confidence in the boat. It is best suited for experienced rowers ready to sharpen their skills on the water. New this year it is 8 weeks versus 6. Each class limited to 25 rowers.

Youth Elite Racing Team

May 11 - August 16 (no classes week of June 29-July 6)

Twelve week session | W 4:30-6pm, Su 9-10:30am

This program is for youth rowers with at least 2 years (4 or more seasons) of rowing experience. Rowers should have coastal or flatwater high school racing experience. This is a great option for very experienced CMI rowers, Hingham HS rowers looking for off-season conditioning, or prep school and college rowers home for the summer. A team of 5-10 rowers will train 2x a week for the most challenging races in New England.

Youth Skills Session

May 26- June 4 | 2 Weeks | T-TH 3:45-5:30pm

Kick off the season with a leadership and skill-building rowing session designed for all experience levels. New rowers will learn the fundamentals—starting on the erg and quickly progressing to the water—while experienced rowers can step into leadership roles by learning to cox, helping guide newer athletes, and developing racing skills. For New Rowers: We will start on rowing machines, and graduate you to the water quickly. 

This is a great pre-summer opportunity to grow confidence, build experience, and get ready for the full summer season.

Youth Summer Season

July - August |Three 2-week sessions | Classes M- Th 9:30-11:30am

Summer on Cohasset Harbor gaining confidence, new skills, friendships, and having fun. Our youth program is open to experienced and first time rowers who have completed 6th grade, our oldest rowers are High School age. They row under the guidance of our experienced coaches in crews that include four rowers and one experienced coxswain to steer the boat. 

Every other week is a Fun Friday night race- families welcome to cheer from land or by boat and to join the post race celebration- starts at 5:00pm. Each class limited to 25 rowers.

Youth Fall Season

Six week session | Weekly classes

Option 1: 3:30-5:30pm TU, W, TH

Option 2: As a second sport, TU & TH 5:30-6:30pm, SU 9:30-10:30am

Our fall program is open to experienced rowers who have completed 6th grade, our oldest rowers are High School age. This season rowers work on stamina and improving technique as we gear up for the Head of the Weir in October (optional to sign up).

Youth Indoor Training Session I

Six week session • December 2- January 22 (no classes Dec 23- Jan 1)

2x Days a Week | TU & TH 3:45-4:45pm or 5:00 to 6:00pm,

Open to South Shore new and returning rowers grades 7-12, with consideration for 6th grade by individual assessment only. Indoor training is designed to build strength, endurance, and confidence using indoor rowing machines (ergs) and other fitness tools. Our two goals are (1) improve your rowing technique and (2) improve fitness and core strength. Classes are suitable for experienced rowers looking to stay fit, future rowers planning to join our (or another) team on the water, and non-rowers just looking to get fit. This program works best as a 2-day-per-week commitment. Each class size is limited to 12.

Youth Indoor Training Session II • Cohasset Recreation

Six week session • January 27 - March 12 (no classes Feb 17 & 19)

2x Days a Week | TU & TH 3:45-4:45pm or 5:00 to 6:00pm

Open to South Shore new and returning rowers grades 7-12, with consideration for 6th grade by individual assessment only. Indoor training is designed to build strength, endurance, and confidence using indoor rowing machines (ergs) and other fitness tools. Our two goals are (1) improve your rowing technique and (2) improve fitness and core strength. Classes are suitable for experienced rowers looking to stay fit, future rowers planning to join our (or another) team on the water, and non-rowers just looking to get fit. This program works best as a 2-day-per-week commitment. Each class size is limited to 12.

Youth Indoor Training Session II • Scituate Recreation

Six week session • February - April 4

1-2x Days a Week | M &/or W 4:00 to 5:00pm,

This is a second session of a new program out of the Scituate Recreation Center at 327 First Parish Rd, Scituate. Participation in session I is not a prerequisite - neither is having experience! Sign up to learn to row, build on your rowing skills, or simply come to get fit! This program works best as a 2-day-per-week commitment though it is possible to sign up for one day a week. Class size is limited to 8. Registration is direct through Scituate Recreation Department's website.

IMPORTANT DETAILS

To participate all rowers and their guardian(s) will read and sign the CMI waiver and accept our safety policy. In addition we ask every rower to review the US Rowing Safety video. It's a staple for most rowing clubs as it covers important knowledge for on the water, on the land, weather indicators, and how to respond in an emergency.

What to know for your rowing session

  • Layers are key! It can be warmer on land than on the water- or the other way around!

  • Your feet will get wet & the boat ramp can be slippery. Wear water shoes, crocs, old sneakers, etc. but not flip flops.

  • Water bottle

  • Cap with visor and/or sunglasses

  • Wear sunblock
