Ready to row into crisp mornings and golden light? Whether you're chasing glassy water at dawn, carving through brisk chop past the lighthouse, or catching your breath -and your oar- as the sun rises later and sets earlier, fall rowing brings a rhythm and beauty all its own. Time to layer up—Cohasset Harbor is quieting down, and the best rows are just beginning.
Similar to summer, but only six weeks - hopefully these clarifications help as you gather yourself and your crew to register by August 23!
Typically, this fall season is made up of crews of four rowers. Each crew has the option to row once per week.
Got your crew set? Great! Next, name your crew and choose a captain. The captain is the point of contact for crew & CMI season communications.
All crews are responsible for ensuring their rowers show up at the correct times and for using a registered rower from the current season as a sub to fill any empty seat.
Rowing times are typically on specific weekday mornings between 6:30am-9:30am, and evenings at 5:30pm, plus weekend mornings with rows between 7:00am-10am. Each row is scheduled for 90 minutes and includes time for crews to rig and de-reg their own boat. Fall rowing has a DIY feel as much of our staff is back to school. Pictured is an old boat schedule for example purposes only.
Once your full crew is all registered we will create the boat schedule based safety, staffing, and crew requests. The final boat schedule will be based on crews fully registered by August 23 and published soon after.

This is an email contact list that allows rowers to fill their seats, sometimes last minute, when they cannot make a row. This email group is to be used only for this CMI purpose.
All registered weekly fall rowers will be added to the sublist at no additional fee (they may unsubscribe at anytime). A limited number of sub only rowers may join for a one time fee of $35. These packages will open after the boat schedule has been issued. Rowing opportunities are not guaranteed but based on crew needs.
Remember, 1) If you choose to cancel your row rather than using a substitute rower, that does not guarantee a row at a later date; and, 2) A substitute rower who accepts a spot is responsible for finding their own replacement should their plans change.
How to use sublist:
1. Address email to yourself & your crew
2. BCC ( blind copy) the sublist (email will be given after registration)
3. Subject- "Sub needed: date and time"
4. Keep message short but include if you are open to all experience levels
5. Subs, please only reply to the sender(s)
6. Crew & Sub, exchange cell phone & crew name, in case of cancellation.
7. Once seat is filled, requestor should repeat steps 1-3 but add "FILLED" to the beginning of the subject line (do not add additional text in the body.)
To participate all rowers need to have accepted the CMI waiver and safety policy. This is normally done annually with first of the year registrations or during new member sign ups- the digital waiver is sent via email.
In addition we ask every rower to review the US Rowing Safety video before starting the season. It's a staple for most rowing clubs as it covers important knowledge for on the water, on the land, weather indicators, and how to respond in an emergency. The video is found embedded in our website on the rowing landing page and a link will be in your confirmation email.
Dress in layers – It may be warmer or colder on the water than on land. Avoid loose shirts in the back due to sliding seats.
Footwear matters – Your feet will get wet and the ramp can be slippery. Wear water shoes, crocs, or old sneakers (no flip-flops).
Bring a reusable water bottle – No single-use bottles. We’re a carry-in/carry-out facility and strive to reduce waste.
Sun protection – Wear sunblock, a cap with a visor, and/or sunglasses - even in the fall the sun can be bright.
Leave valuables at home – CMI is not responsible for lost items. Only leave keys in the designated spot at the boathouse.
Parker Ave parking is very limited and requires a Cohasset All Facilities Sticker. Police do ticket for violations.
Sailing Club and Town Wharf parking also requires the sticker and should be reserved for sailors and fishermen.
Cohasset Lightkeepers lot is available only when there is no event AND a CMI Rower parking sign must be displayed on your dashboard each time you park there. Violators will be ticketed.
Border Street parking is open to all.
We highly encourage walking, biking, or carpooling whenever possible.

Safety—rowers and staff—guide all decisions. If CMI cancels due to unsafe conditions (dense fog, high wind, or a Harbor Master directive), crew captains will be notified by text as soon as possible and will inform their crews.
Weather can change quickly before or during a row, so if you have not heard from CMI, assume the row is on. Ergs are always available when the boathouse is open, so a rowing workout is still possible.
If you choose not to row due to personal preference, we are unable to offer refunds or reschedules, as staff are still scheduled and paid.
If your crew needs to cancel in advance, the crew captain should email Laura (administrator@rowcmi.org) and Frank (programdirector@rowcmi.org). For cancellations within 24 hours, the captain should text both Laura (781-600-2100) and Frank (413-695-7369) ASAP so necessary changes can be coordinated.
By policy, crews do not receive refunds or guaranteed make-up sessions for cancellations. When possible, we may offer make-ups during “off” weeks for crews impacted multiple times, depending on staff and volunteer availability. Please reach out if you feel this applies to your crew.
Remember, the sublist is a great way to make up missed rows!
**As always, we believe that cost should never be a barrier to rowing so please do not hesitate to reach out to
administrator@rowcmi.org and we'll find options to keep you rowing!**
