At Power of One – Lakewood, we believe that self-awareness is the foundation of growth — both on and off the mat. When students develop a deeper understanding of their thoughts, emotions, and actions, they become more in control of their behavior, better equipped to make good choices, and more confident in themselves. Self-awareness empowers martial artists to stay safe, act responsibly, and recognize their own potential.
Throughout June, we’ll explore how self-awareness strengthens character and sharpens both mental and physical skills. This theme connects directly to our training: the more aware students are of their bodies, boundaries, and surroundings, the more confident and capable they become.
Our weekly focus points will be:
The first step in self-awareness is understanding how to protect ourselves and others. This means being aware of our surroundings, understanding personal boundaries, and recognizing when something feels wrong. In class, we’ll discuss how students can use self-awareness to avoid risky situations, stay alert in public spaces, and develop safe habits at home, school, and during activities.
Self-awareness begins with understanding who we are — our strengths, our weaknesses, and the things we want to improve. When students gain knowledge about themselves, they begin to take ownership of their actions and choices. We’ll help students reflect on what they’re learning, what challenges them, and how they can use that knowledge to grow as martial artists and people.
Intuition is that quiet voice that tells us something doesn’t feel right — and learning to trust it is a key part of self-awareness. We’ll teach students to listen to their instincts, especially in situations where their safety or values may be at risk. In class, we’ll role-play real-life scenarios where trusting your gut can make a big difference.
Self-awareness also means understanding how our habits affect others. This week, we’ll focus on personal hygiene — from keeping our uniforms clean to washing our hands and bodies regularly. Good hygiene shows respect for ourselves and for our teammates. It’s also a reminder that self-care is a key part of success in martial arts and life.
Self-awareness is the mirror through which we see our true potential. By helping our students become more in tune with themselves — mentally, emotionally, and physically — we’re not just building better martial artists… we’re building stronger, more thoughtful people.
Let’s grow together, one class at a time.
